Stephen Hammond MP

Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon, spent Monday 28 July - Friday 1 August 2008 working with young people from Fairbridge, Birmingham.

Working with young people formerly in care and ex-offenders, Fairbridge organised a 4 day access course in Wales with activities set around a cave, gorge, lake, night walk and climbing. It was an intensive period in intense conditions.

Stephens role as a volunteer included staying overnight with the staff and young people, being involved in various activities and recording a video diary that assessed his emotional responses and interactions with the others.

The group returned to the Fairbridge Centre in Birmingham on the Friday for a final review of what people learnt about themselves and how they responded.

Claire Rigby, Centre Manager, describes a real gap in social literacy between where NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training) are at and the training they need to get them ready for any training or education. The access course is designed to bridge that gap.
