Credit Crunch
A step in the right direction on family breakdown

New measures to strengthen families, announced by the Prime Minister (18th May 2012), are backed by the CSJ.

The CSJ has consistently called for all mothers and fathers to have access to relationship and parenting support, not just those in our most disadvantaged areas, in crisis or on the verge of breakdown.

Many parents do struggle; there is no formal training course or parenting qualification, but everyone wants to do the best they can for their children. A £3.4 million information service, combined with parenting vouchers and classes, will help to ensure that parenting support is as commonplace as antenatal care.

In the midst of all the challenges families face, especially in hard economic times, it can be difficult for parents to sustain their own relationship. But research shows the way that parents overcome difficulties has a huge impact on their children. Trialling subsidised counselling for couples is a small but important step in the right direction to tackle our high and rising rates of family breakdown.
